Manchester United Captain Bruno Fernandes Responds to Criticism from Club Co-Owner Jim Ratcliffe

After club co-owner Jim Ratcliffe suggested that some players at Manchester United were “overpaid” and “not good enough,” captain Bruno Fernandes has come to the defense of himself and his teammates.

Ratcliffe, who recently acquired a minority stake in the club, commended Fernandes but raised concerns about the financial decisions surrounding signings such as Casemiro, Rasmus Højlund, and André Onana made prior to his involvement.

Fernandes, who recently scored a hat-trick in United’s Europa League victory over Real Sociedad, refuted the idea that players should be held accountable for the contracts they sign.

“It’s disheartening to hear such comments. No player enjoys being labeled as overpaid or inadequate,” Fernandes expressed. “However, every contract is mutually agreed upon by the club and the player. It is our responsibility to demonstrate our value on the pitch.”

As Manchester United’s Europa League campaign remains their sole chance for silverware this season, the team finds itself in 13th place in the Premier League and out of contention in domestic cup competitions.

Fernandes also disclosed that he had received offers to depart Old Trafford last summer but opted to stay after conversations with the club and former manager Erik ten Hag.

“I was informed that I played a significant role in the club’s reconstruction, and I believed in our potential for success,” Fernandes shared.

Despite his impressive performance as United’s top scorer with 15 goals this season, Fernandes has faced criticism from former captain Roy Keane, who questioned his leadership abilities recently.

However, Fernandes expressed his admiration for Keane’s perspective and aims to disprove any doubts in his own manner.

“I have immense respect for Roy. I strive to be the best captain I can for my teammates, each in my unique way,” he stated.
