As Illinois Democrats eagerly anticipate the potential exit of Sen. Dick Durbin in 2026, the spotlight has turned to the state’s lieutenant governor, Juliana Stratton, as a possible contender for the Senate seat. Since taking office in 2019, Stratton has been quietly laying the groundwork for a Senate bid, reaching out to key Democratic figures for support, according to sources familiar with her plans.

Reports indicate that Stratton has already secured the backing of Gov. JB Pritzker, a prominent Democratic figure known for his financial resources and fundraising prowess. Pritzker’s endorsement and financial support could significantly boost Stratton’s campaign, potentially making her a frontrunner in what is expected to be a competitive primary race.

While Pritzker’s team has not officially confirmed their support for Stratton, the governor’s close relationship with the lieutenant governor, whom he hand-picked as his running mate in 2017, suggests a strong possibility of his involvement in her potential Senate bid.

With Durbin’s future still uncertain, other Democratic candidates have also been preparing for a possible Senate run. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, who has been building up his campaign war chest for years, is among the contenders, along with Reps. Lauren Underwood and Robin Kelly, both of whom have strong political backgrounds and support within the party.

Meanwhile, speculation has been swirling around former Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel, who recently returned from a diplomatic post in Japan. While Emanuel’s current focus is on his role as a commentator on CNN, his name has also been floated as a potential candidate for the Senate seat, adding another layer of intrigue to the upcoming race.

As Illinois Democrats engage in this political parlor game, the state’s political landscape stands poised for a potential shift in power dynamics. With Durbin’s retirement looming as a possibility, the race to succeed him is shaping up to be a high-stakes contest that could have far-reaching implications for the state and beyond.
