Are you interested in shedding light on the social and structural factors that shape health outcomes in your community? Do you have a story to share about how poverty, inequality, access to healthcare, or living conditions impact people’s health? If so, Health-e News invites community journalists and grassroots activists to join our 2025 Social Determinants of Health Project. Through this project, you will have the opportunity to make a real impact through storytelling.

What the Project Offers:
The 2025 Social Determinants of Health Project aims to empower community journalists and activists by providing them with the tools and support needed to address the factors contributing to poor health in their communities. Participants will have the opportunity to amplify the voices of those most affected by social determinants of health, and to bring attention to the issues that impact health outcomes.

Who Should Apply:
You do not need to be a seasoned journalist to apply for this project. If you are passionate, motivated, and eager to learn, we want to hear from you. Whether you have experience in journalism or community activism, we encourage you to apply and share your unique perspective on the social determinants of health in your community.

Commitment:
Participants in the 2025 Social Determinants of Health Project will be expected to dedicate time and effort to researching and reporting on the factors that influence health outcomes in their communities. This may involve conducting interviews, gathering data, and producing articles or videos that highlight the impact of social determinants of health.

Application Requirements:
To apply for the project, interested individuals must submit a personal statement (250-400 words) explaining why they want to be part of the project and what stories they hope to tell. Journalists should also include three published writing and/or video samples, while activists should share writing samples or describe a project or campaign they have been involved in.

Deadline:
Applications for the 2025 Social Determinants of Health Project close on Friday, February 7, 2025. All applications must be submitted by noon on the deadline date.

How to Apply:
To apply for the project, send your application to editor@health-e.org.za with the subject line: “Community Journalist/Activist Application – Social Determinants of Health Project.” We are particularly interested in hearing from applicants in rural areas and from the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, KwaZulu Natal, Mpumalanga, North-West, and the Free State. We strongly encourage young black womxn*, LGBTIAQ+ individuals, and gender non-conforming people to apply.

By participating in the 2025 Social Determinants of Health Project, you will have the opportunity to use your voice and storytelling skills to advocate for change and raise awareness about the social factors that impact health outcomes in your community. Join us in making a difference through storytelling. Apply now!
