The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has announced a groundbreaking initiative to establish a specialized Sports Policing Unit with the aim of enhancing safety and security at football matches. This decision comes in the wake of a recent tragic incident during a Ghana Premier League game between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko, which resulted in the untimely death of Francis Yaw Frimpong.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr George Akuffo-Dampare unveiled the details of the new security measures during a closed-door meeting with club representatives. The primary objective of these measures is to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The Sports Policing Unit will collaborate closely with supporter groups, ensure the presence of trained security personnel at matches, and bolster intelligence operations to maintain a safe environment at football events.

Moreover, sports policing will now be integrated into police training programs to equip officers with the necessary skills to effectively manage security concerns related to football matches.

In connection with the tragic death of Francis Yaw Frimpong, six individuals have been apprehended as suspects. The most recent arrest involved a female suspect who was taken into custody by the Ghana Police Service. The suspect, identified as Elizabeth Akosua Ntiriwaa, also known as Akosua Black Chinese, is currently assisting authorities in their investigation into the incident.

Among the other suspects arrested are Nsoatreman FC owner and Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, Joseph Kyeremeh, Agyemang Duah Owusu, Isaac Ofosu, and Augustine Yeboah. Baffour-Awuah and Kyeremeh have been granted bail and are scheduled to appear before the Sunyani District Magistrate Court B on Monday, February 17, 2025.

The establishment of the Sports Policing Unit marks a significant step towards creating a secure environment for football enthusiasts and players alike.
