Nine-year-old Ashley Gindre is breaking barriers in the world of skateboarding, proving that age and gender are not obstacles to success in the sport. Recently, she emerged victorious in the Johannesburg leg of the Kimberley Diamond Cup competition, competing against girls several years older than her in the under-16 category.

Despite facing opponents with more experience, Ashley’s fearless attitude and determination set her apart. She attributes her confidence to the protective gear she wears, including knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, and a helmet. While falls are common in skateboarding, Ashley remains undeterred, citing a minor hip injury as her only setback.

Having discovered her love for skateboarding at the age of six, Ashley is now setting her sights on becoming a professional skateboarder and competing on the international stage. Her ultimate goal is to represent her country in the Olympics, focusing on park skating over street skating.

Ashley’s competitive spirit is inherited from her father, Nick Gindre, a former professional football player turned weightlifter. Nick, who owns a gym in Johannesburg, supports Ashley’s passion for skateboarding and ensures she receives proper training and equipment to minimize the risk of injury.

Skateboarding’s popularity in South Africa is on the rise, with more girls like Ashley participating in competitive events. Initiatives such as Girls Skate South Africa and the Johannesburg Skate Club aim to make the sport more accessible to children from all backgrounds, promoting empowerment, self-expression, and community building.

Coach Sharne Jacobs, who runs Girls Skate South Africa, notes the increasing skill level among female skaters and the positive impact of skateboarding on participants’ confidence and well-being. With skateboarding now recognized as an Olympic sport, the sport has gained mainstream credibility, attracting new enthusiasts and elevating the level of competition.

As Ashley continues to pursue her dream of becoming a professional skateboarder, she embodies the passion and determination that define the skateboarding community. With the support of her family, coaches, and fellow skaters, Ashley is poised to make her mark in the world of skateboarding and inspire the next generation of riders.
