Man Sentenced to Seven Years for Carjacking in Chinatown
CHICAGO — Dante Williams, a 22-year-old man who pleaded guilty to carjacking a driver at gunpoint in Chinatown, was sentenced to seven years in prison on Wednesday. Williams, who has been in custody since his arrest on April 1, 2022, is not expected to serve any additional time behind bars.
The carjacking took place at 7:10 p.m. on March 27, 2022, in the 2400 block of South Canal. According to Chicago police, Williams and another man approached a 48-year-old man as he was attempting to park his vehicle. Williams brandished a handgun as he walked to the passenger side of the man’s car, while his accomplice headed to the driver’s side.
Williams’ accomplice assaulted the victim, ordering him to exit the vehicle, while Williams displayed the firearm. The entire incident was captured on a nearby surveillance camera.
Police located the stolen Acura MDX on April 1, with Williams inside the vehicle. When approached by law enforcement, Williams fled on foot, discarding a handgun in some bushes. He later confessed to possessing the firearm.
On Wednesday, Williams pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular hijacking and unlawful possession of a weapon. Judge Pamela Stratigakis handed down a six-year sentence for the carjacking and an additional one-year sentence for the firearm possession. With credit for 1,320 days served in custody, Williams is expected to be released after completing the Illinois Department of Corrections’ admission procedures.
