Thirty filmmakers from 13 African countries have been selected to take part in the 4th edition of the Durban FilmMart Institute Business Lab, a prestigious program that is part of the DFMI year-round initiative. The online program kicked off in mid-September 2024 and is set to conclude in January 2025.

The DFMI Business Lab is a comprehensive 14-week online course designed to equip producers with essential business skills needed to navigate the global film market successfully. Participants will delve into modules covering topics such as financial management, fundraising, co-production, business management, intellectual property and entertainment law, as well as public relations and distribution strategies.

The diverse group of participants includes filmmakers from various African countries including Tanzania, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia, Namibia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Gabon, Egypt, Mozambique, and Botswana. Each filmmaker brings a unique perspective and experience to the program, contributing to a rich and dynamic learning environment.

The program is a collaboration between the Durban FilmMart Institute, DW Akademie, and is supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The Durban FilmMart Institute is primarily funded by the Durban Film Office and the eThekwini Municipality, demonstrating a strong commitment to supporting and developing the African film industry.

The DFMI Business Lab is a valuable opportunity for filmmakers to enhance their skills, expand their networks, and gain insights into the global film market. By equipping participants with essential business knowledge and strategies, the program aims to empower African filmmakers to create impactful and successful film projects that resonate on a global scale.
