A 10-year-old girl driving a dirt bike died after being hit by a car near Pagosa Springs on Thursday, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, state troopers received a call about a fatal crash at the intersection of Forest Service Road 631 and Forest Service Road 640 in Archuleta County near Pagosa Springs, according to a news release from the Colorado State Patrol.
A girl driving a dirt bike south on Forest Service Road 640 ran a stop sign at the intersection of Forest Service Road 631. She was unable to navigate a sharp right turn onto Forest Service Road 631 and went into the eastbound lane, according to Colorado State Patrol. An 18-year-old man driving a Toyota Tacoma east on Forest Service Road 631 hit the dirt bike. The man was not injured and remained at the scene, according to the release.
The girl was wearing a helmet and protective gear when the crash occurred. Bystanders and emergency medical services personnel performed life-saving measures, but she was pronounced deceased at the scene, the release states. The girl has not been publicly identified.
The crash is under investigation by the Colorado State Patrol. More information is not yet available.
