The GTA 6 trailer leak was a huge deal for fans, and you’d think it would be just as huge of a deal for the creators. But that might not really be the case. In a recent interview prior to Take-Two’s latest earnings call, the company’s CEO Strauss Zelnick says the GTA VI trailer leak didn’t really seem to ultimately hurt the development team. He does note, however, that the leak was “disappointing.”
Officially, the trailer was supposed to be unveiled on the morning of December 5, 2023. But it was leaked the evening before. This resulted in Rockstar announcing the game not long after that same evening alongside the trailer reveal. A still exciting but no doubt somber moment for all involved in the game’s creation. You could imagine that this is probably an accurate description of how it would feel. An official announcement and a reveal for a project you’ve been passionately working on is likely to be an exciting moment. But that excitement has the potential to be deflated a little with a leak.
That seems to be the nature of things these days though. Stuff gets leaked all the time. And in most cases, it doesn’t appear to have much of a negative impact on the company. Nevertheless, it certainly takes away from some of the excitement generated by the surprise. Zelnick and the teams at Take-Two and Rockstar appear to feel the same. “It’s amazing when the trailer announcement is huge news, and then we were very gratified when the trailer broke the internet…so we couldn’t be happier or more excited. In terms of the leak, that’s always disappointing for the team, but ultimately, I don’t think it hurt us,” Zelnick said.
In addition to the trailer leak, Take-Two CEO talks GTA 6 release plans
The game was initially set for release in 2025. And according to Zelnick, that’s still the plan. That being said there is no exact date for the game’s release. But speculation suggests that Take-Two and Rockstar could be targeting sometime between January and March. If those are accurate predictions, then fans have at most, a little over a year left to wait.
GTA 6 is highly likely to be a huge hit. Its predecessor, GTA 6, is already one of the best-selling games of all time. And if the excitement from fans about the GTA 6 trailer is anything to go by then it won’t be surprising to see it surpass GTA 5 in popularity. Following the trailer’s official reveal, multiple fans have taken to YouTube and other social platforms to post trailer remakes. One fan recreated the entire trailer using in-game footage from GTA 5. Even Hyundai Motorsport got in on the fun and created an ad based on the trailer using real people. It’s been recreated with LEGO too.
