Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed on Thursday that 20 Israeli hostages held by Hamas in Gaza are alive. In a video message posted on his official account, Netanyahu reassured the public that intelligence assessments have verified the status of the captives. Efforts are underway to negotiate a release deal through mediators in Egypt and Qatar, with talks commencing in Doha recently. It is estimated that 58 hostages, both alive and deceased, remain in Gaza.
Netanyahu emphasized that Israel remains steadfast in its mission and is not giving up on any of its war aims. He engaged in discussions with U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, and planned to address the hostage crisis with U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee. The Prime Minister’s determination was evident in his message on social media, countering criticisms from groups like the Hostages and Missing Families Forum.
Following the recent release of IDF soldier Edan Alexander, his mother expressed gratitude to various parties but notably did not mention Netanyahu. Nevertheless, Witkoff conveyed to the family that the Prime Minister played a crucial role in securing her son’s freedom. Netanyahu conducted extensive meetings with Witkoff and the negotiation team to strategize on the remaining hostages’ release.
The ongoing efforts coincide with former President Trump’s presence in Qatar, a key mediator alongside Egypt and the United States. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, with hopes for a successful resolution to the hostage crisis. Netanyahu’s leadership and diplomatic engagements are instrumental in navigating the complex negotiations for the hostages’ safe return.
