A homeless man in Denver was recently awarded over $1 million by a jury after being beaten and dragged from the lobby of a downtown apartment complex nearly three years ago. The incident took place at The Quincy Apartments on Curtis St., where Early Jackson sought refuge from the cold on a January night in 2022.
Jackson, who had moved to Colorado from North Carolina and worked full-time but couldn’t afford housing, asked to warm up by the lobby fireplace. Initially allowed to stay by the concierges, the situation escalated when a security guard was called to remove him. What followed was a violent altercation where one of the concierges pulled out a gun and both employees physically assaulted Jackson before dragging him out onto the sidewalk.
The homeless man sustained severe injuries, requiring emergency back surgery and trauma care at a hospital. The jury found the concierges and their company liable for economic, physical, and punitive damages, although Jackson’s own negligence in seeking medical care was also noted. His attorney highlighted the challenges homeless individuals face in accessing healthcare and praised the jury for emphasizing the importance of treating everyone with dignity.
Despite the verdict, attorneys for the concierges and the apartment complex’s management company did not provide immediate comments. It’s worth noting that the concierges were not criminally charged for their actions. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding basic human rights for all individuals, regardless of their social or economic status.
