Zero Carbon Charge, a groundbreaking South African startup specializing in off-grid, solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, has recently received a R100 million (approximately US$5.6 million) equity investment from the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA).
This substantial funding will be instrumental in supporting the expansion of a nationwide network of ultra-fast EV charging stations, strategically spaced every 150 kilometers along key national routes. Each station will operate entirely off-grid, utilizing solar energy and battery storage to reduce reliance on traditional energy sources like Eskom, while also alleviating range anxiety for electric vehicle drivers.
In addition to enhancing EV infrastructure, Zero Carbon Charge’s innovative model brings tangible benefits to rural communities. Through partnerships with landowners hosting charging stations, they will receive 5% of the annual electricity revenue, providing a reliable source of income. Furthermore, the establishment of each charging site contributes to job creation and stimulates economic development in underserved areas.
DBSA’s substantial investment underscores its commitment to promoting sustainable and inclusive economic growth across Southern Africa. Lebogang Seperepere, Acting Group Executive for Project Preparation at DBSA, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, “We are pleased to invest R100 million in Zero Carbon Charge’s off-grid EV charging initiative, which will help expand South Africa’s EV market, create jobs, stimulate the economy, and contribute to climate change mitigation.”
Joubert Roux, Founder of Zero Carbon Charge, expressed gratitude for DBSA’s support, acknowledging their professionalism and dedication throughout the due diligence process. He affirmed the company’s unwavering commitment to realizing their mission of transforming South Africa’s transport sector through renewable, off-grid energy solutions for electric vehicles.
Established in 2023, Zero Carbon Charge is dedicated to revolutionizing the country’s transportation landscape by providing sustainable, off-grid energy solutions for EVs. Their charging stations are designed to operate independently of the national grid, ensuring consistent and environmentally friendly power for electric vehicle drivers.
This investment marks a significant milestone for Zero Carbon Charge and sets the stage for the continued growth and expansion of sustainable transportation solutions in South Africa.
