New WHO Representative Dr. Fabian Ndenzako to Lead Health Efforts in Botswana and SADC
Dr. Fabian Ndenzako has been appointed as the new Head of Mission and WHO Representative to Botswana and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). With over 25 years of experience in public health, including extensive service with WHO in various regions, Dr. Ndenzako brings a wealth of expertise to his new role.
His appointment comes at a critical juncture as WHO strengthens its collaboration with the newly elected government of Botswana. Guided by the WHO Country Cooperation Strategy 2024–2027, Dr. Ndenzako will focus on aligning efforts with Botswana’s National Development Plan, prioritizing areas such as Universal Health Coverage, integrated health services, disease prevention, health security, and multisectoral action for a healthier population.
Dr. Ndenzako, a medical doctor trained at the University of Dar es Salaam, holds a master’s in public health from the University of Oslo and a master’s in development studies and diplomacy from the University for Peace. His academic background complements his extensive experience in global health systems, policy, and diplomacy.
Prior to his role in Botswana, Dr. Ndenzako served as Acting WHO Representative in South Africa and led WHO country offices in South Sudan and Malawi. His leadership in navigating complex public health landscapes and mobilizing resources has been instrumental in strengthening national health responses.
With experience supporting over 20 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa on HIV, Hepatitis, and TB programs, Dr. Ndenzako is well-equipped to drive impactful implementation of health initiatives in Botswana. His collaborative approach with governments, NGOs, and international partners underscores his commitment to inclusive public health strategies.
As the new WHO Representative in Botswana, Dr. Ndenzako is poised to advance health and well-being in the region. His visionary leadership and vast experience are set to make a significant impact on the health of the people of Botswana and the broader SADC community.
