November 14th marks World Diabetes Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about diabetes and its impact on individuals worldwide. This year, the theme from 2024 to 2026 is ‘Diabetes and Well-being’, shedding light on the crucial yet often overlooked aspect of mental health in diabetes care. Dr Patrick Ngassa Piotie and Dr Sonja Mostert of the University of Pretoria’s Diabetes Research Centre emphasize the importance of mental health support for individuals living with diabetes.

Living with diabetes comes with a myriad of challenges, from monitoring blood sugar levels to following a strict diet. Children and adolescents with diabetes face additional hurdles as they navigate the complexities of growing up while managing a chronic illness. The emotional toll can lead to anxiety, burnout, and social isolation, exacerbating the already demanding nature of diabetes management.

In South Africa, the burden of diabetes is significant, with over 4.3 million adults currently living with the condition. Despite the physical toll of diabetes being well-documented, the mental health impact is often overlooked. Research shows that individuals with diabetes are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and burnout, especially when the condition is poorly controlled. The lack of integration between physical and mental health care further compounds these issues.

The University of Pretoria’s Diabetes Research Centre is taking steps to address these challenges. Through webinars and research studies, the centre is highlighting the critical link between diabetes and mental health. By focusing on a holistic approach to diabetes care, the centre aims to improve outcomes for individuals living with the condition.

In October 2024, the centre launched a study titled ‘Psychological distress and mental health support among people living with diabetes: A South African study’. This research aims to explore the psychological distress experienced by individuals with diabetes and assess the accessibility and quality of mental health support available to them. The findings will inform future interventions and policies to enhance mental health support for individuals with diabetes in South Africa.

This World Diabetes Day, the call to action is clear – prioritize the well-being of individuals living with diabetes. By addressing mental health alongside physical health, we can create a better future for those managing the condition. Comprehensive care that includes mental health support should be a right, not a privilege. Let us commit to making well-being a central part of diabetes care and strive for a brighter, healthier future for all.
