Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has found himself in a precarious situation as he spends the night behind bars at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra. This comes after he failed to meet the bail conditions set for him on Tuesday night.
The controversial party executive, who has been embroiled in allegations of illegal mining activities, was granted bail in the amount of GH¢50 million with two sureties, both of which needed to be justified. Unfortunately, his legal team was unable to fulfill this requirement before the deadline, resulting in Chairman Wontumi remaining in custody overnight.
His lawyer, Andy Appiah Kubi, confirmed to the media that they were unable to secure the necessary sureties in time, leading to his continued detention. “This is part of an ongoing police enquiry. We are complying fully, and hopefully, the conditions will be met soon,” Mr. Appiah Kubi stated.
Chairman Wontumi’s arrest on Tuesday stemmed from his appearance at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, where he was summoned for questioning regarding allegations of illegal mining, locally known as “galamsey.” Following his session with the CID, EOCO officials took him into custody for further interrogation related to suspected financial losses to the state, indicating a broader investigation into illicit mining operations and corruption.
According to his lawyer, Wontumi is now under investigation by EOCO for “causing financial loss to the state,” a serious offense that could have significant legal and political ramifications if substantiated. Despite denying any wrongdoing, Chairman Wontumi had previously faced warnings about engaging in mining without a license, polluting water bodies, and operating within protected forest reserves.
Known for his flamboyant style and strong political connections, Chairman Wontumi has been a controversial figure in the NPP. However, this legal challenge marks a significant test for him. News of his arrest spread quickly among party members, leading to a demonstration of support by NPP loyalists outside EOCO’s premises, demanding his release and accusing authorities of political intimidation.
As the GH¢50 million bail remains unmet and investigations continue, all eyes are on EOCO and the Ghana Police Service for the next steps in what could evolve into a pivotal legal and political saga. Wontumi’s legal team is working diligently to fulfill the bail conditions, but his night in EOCO custody signifies a dramatic twist in a case that has captured national attention.
