Why do baby fevers tend to spike at night?

During the winter months, colds, flu, and other viruses tend to be more prevalent as we spend more time indoors. This is especially concerning for parents with babies, as fevers can be a common symptom of these illnesses. Fevers in babies can be particularly worrisome, especially when they spike at night, leaving parents feeling anxious and unsure of how to best care for their little ones.

The link between winter and increased colds and fevers is due to the fact that we spend more time indoors during colder weather. With less ventilation and more close contact, germs can easily spread, and the cold, dry air can weaken our immune systems. Babies, whose immune systems are still developing, are especially vulnerable to these seasonal challenges, with the average baby catching multiple colds in their first year alone.

When it comes to fevers spiking at night, it’s not just a coincidence. Our body’s stress hormones decrease at night, while healing hormones increase, leading to a more active immune system that can raise body temperature. This explains why fevers often worsen while we sleep, causing concern for parents who are trying to care for their sick babies.

Taking your baby’s temperature accurately is crucial in monitoring their health. While it may be instinctive to feel their forehead or neck for signs of fever, using a digital thermometer is the fastest and most reliable method. Rectal thermometers are considered the gold standard for accuracy, while forehead or temporal thermometers are also reliable options.

If your baby does have a fever, it’s important to know when to seek medical advice. For babies under two months old, a fever over 38°C should prompt a call to your pediatrician. Additionally, if the fever lasts longer than 72 hours, or if your baby is showing other concerning symptoms like ear pain, vomiting, or dehydration, it’s crucial to seek professional guidance.
