Rubber flip flops are a popular choice for summer footwear, especially when heading to the beach. However, the downside of wearing rubber flip flops in the summer heat is the increased likelihood of feet slipping and sliding due to excess sweat. As podiatrist Jacqueline Sutera, DPM, explains, higher temperatures lead to increased sweat production, which can result in uncomfortable and smelly feet.

The material of rubber flip flops does not absorb sweat, making it challenging to keep your feet dry and comfortable. Dr. Sutera recommends opting for sandals with a textured footbed to provide better grip and prevent slipping. If foot sweating becomes a persistent issue, it may be necessary to seek medical attention to rule out any underlying infections.

To combat foot odor and excessive sweating, it is essential to regularly replace old shoes, as bacteria can thrive in worn-out footwear and contribute to foul odors. Dr. Sutera suggests a natural remedy using black tea to help reduce foot sweating. Black tea contains tannic acid, which can act as a natural antiperspirant by temporarily shrinking sweat ducts and minimizing sweat production.

To make a potent black tea foot soak, brew a strong concentration of black tea and soak your feet in the solution for about 10 minutes each night. Dr. Sutera advises focusing on the bottom of the feet where sweat glands are located. While results may take a few days to notice, regular foot soaking with black tea can help reduce sweating and odor. Additionally, the tannic acid in black tea can act as an exfoliant, promoting softer and smoother feet.

Incorporating a black tea foot soak into your foot care routine can be a simple and effective way to manage excessive sweating during the summer months. By taking care of your feet and practicing self-care rituals, you can ensure that your feet stay comfortable and odor-free all season long.
