The Flying Eagles, Nigeria’s U20 national team, have received a significant boost in financial support from various sources ahead of their crucial WAFU B U20 tournament final against Ghana’s Black Satellites. Super Eagles forward Taiwo Awoniyi, currently playing for Nottingham Forest, made a generous donation of 2.5 million naira to the team to help them stay motivated and focused on maintaining their dominance in the region.
This contribution follows a previous donation of 5 million naira from Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi before the Flying Eagles’ semifinal victory over Junior Mena of Niger Republic. Notable contributions have also come from other well-known Nigerians, including Senator Barau Jibrin, who donated 2 million naira, Crystal Sapphire Ltd. chairman Frank Peters, who gave 1.5 million naira, and Lagos State Football Association chairman Alhaji Gafar Liameed, who contributed one million naira.
Team communications officer Sharif Abdullah expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support the U20 team has received from Nigerians, confirming the donations. The Flying Eagles have impressed in the tournament, defeating Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, and Niger Republic to secure a spot in the final.
Head coach Aliyu Zubairu praised his players for their resilience and character following their initial defeat to Burkina Faso. He commended their fighting spirit and determination, which has seen them bounce back and reach the tournament final against Ghana. The Flying Eagles are determined to retain the title they won two years ago and have already secured a place in the AFCON U20 tournament for next year.
