The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has declared a state of emergency in response to severe coastal erosion that has displaced hundreds of residents in the Ketu South Municipality. A series of strong tidal waves over the past week have wreaked havoc on several coastal communities, destroying homes, cemeteries, and farmlands. Minister Gunu has emphasized the gravity of the situation, labeling it a national security concern and urging immediate intervention to prevent further devastation.

During a meeting with the Volta Regional Security Council and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in Tokor, Minister Gunu highlighted the urgent need for action. He expressed concern over the psychological distress experienced by residents, particularly women and children, as their homes and livelihoods are washed away by the relentless waves.

The minister also pointed out that the affected areas are significantly below sea level, making them highly susceptible to future tidal waves. He issued a stark warning that without prompt action, the level of destruction could spiral out of control.

In response to the crisis, relief items have been distributed to over 510 affected residents. However, many victims are calling for a more sustainable solution—the completion of the sea defense project. One resident stressed the importance of prioritizing infrastructure over temporary relief aid, stating, “We don’t need rice or maize. All we need is for them to complete the sea defense so we can be safe and take care of ourselves.”

Concerns have also been raised about delays in the Ghana Gas shelter project, which was supposed to provide 15 units of two-bedroom apartments to facilitate relocation efforts for displaced residents.

Government authorities have reassured the public that steps are being taken to address the crisis. However, residents are hopeful for a lasting solution that will safeguard their communities from future disasters. As they await further action, the call for the completion of vital infrastructure projects like the sea defense remains paramount in ensuring the safety and well-being of those affected.

The situation in the Volta region underscores the urgent need for coordinated efforts to address coastal erosion and protect vulnerable communities from the destructive forces of nature. As the government and local authorities work towards finding sustainable solutions, the resilience and unity of the affected residents will be crucial in overcoming this challenging time.
