Shooting Meteor Explodes Into Huge Fireball Over Colorado
A dazzling display of nature’s beauty graced the night sky over Colorado on Sunday, Oct. 3, as a shooting meteor exploded into a massive fireball.
With fall in full swing, meteor season is in high gear and promises more celestial spectacles as we progress through October.
Witnesses from various parts of Colorado, including Castlerock and Boulder, reported seeing a bright streak of light streaking across the sky around 4:30 a.m. Mountain Time. The meteor then burst into a brilliant explosion, briefly illuminating the darkness in a breathtaking display.
Multiple residential security cameras captured the mesmerizing event, garnering attention online for its awe-inspiring nature.
Both the Cloudbait Observatory and lightning mappers aboard satellites confirmed the sightings, prompting the American Meteor Society to launch an investigation into the incident.
According to NASA Meteor Watch, the meteor appeared above the mountains east of Vail, traveling at a speed of 55,000 miles per hour before disintegrating at an altitude of 35 miles above Vasquez Peak. The resulting flash of light was three times brighter than a full moon, casting a momentary glow across the sky.
The meteor’s trajectory was believed to have passed near Boulder, west of Denver, after being spotted outside Estes Park.
October boasts two active meteor showers: the Southern Taurids, ongoing from Sept. 10 to Nov. 20, and the Orionids, peaking on Oct. 21 and lasting until Nov. 7. Stargazers can anticipate a display of around 13 meteors per hour during the early morning hours.
As meteor season unfolds, keep a watchful eye on your door cam for more celestial surprises, and don’t hesitate to share any footage capturing these extraordinary events!
