A Colorado speller faced a tough opponent on Wednesday morning at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Blanche Li, an eighth-grader from Boulder’s Summit Middle School, stumbled on the word “taqueria,” a Mexican restaurant specializing in tacos, during the sixth round. Unfortunately, this spelling error led to her elimination from the competition.

On the other hand, Ved Raju, a 12-year-old seventh-grader from Aurora Quest K-8 school sponsored by JS, aced his sixth-round word “apoptosis.” This term refers to a genetically directed process of cell self-destruction, as defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary. Raju’s success propelled him further in the competition, showcasing his impressive spelling skills.

As the rounds progressed, fewer than 50 of the top spellers in the country remained standing in the Bee. With more than 240 participants initially competing on Tuesday, the intensity and excitement of the event continued to build. The finals are scheduled for Thursday, where the remaining spellers will battle it out for the coveted title.
