Trump Announces Tariffs on EU, Canada, and Mexico Imports
US President Donald Trump made a significant announcement during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, revealing plans to impose tariffs on European Union products at a rate of 25 per cent. He also mentioned that tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico would come into effect in early April.
Trump did not mince words when addressing the EU, claiming that the bloc was specifically formed to undermine the United States. He stated, “Look, let’s be honest, the European Union was formed to screw the United States.”
When questioned about the finalised tariff levels, Trump confirmed that they would be set at 25 per cent across the board. He also mentioned that the tariffs would target a variety of goods, including automobiles, as he accused the EU of taking advantage of the US.
Trump has been vocal about his intentions to address what he perceives as unfair trade practices by US trading partners. He hinted at imposing tariffs on key imported goods such as cars and pharmaceuticals to level the playing field.
Despite previously postponing tariffs on Canada and Mexico due to concerns over immigration and drug trafficking, Trump clarified that the tariffs had not been completely abandoned. He confirmed that the duties would be enforced starting 2 April.
