The NAP Expo 2025 recently concluded in Lusaka, Zambia, highlighting the urgent need for increased investment in climate adaptation to protect lives, improve living standards, and boost economic growth. The event focused on enhancing countries’ capacity to advance National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) ahead of COP30 in Brazil and addressing the financing gaps that hinder effective climate adaptation.
During the Expo, updated adaptation guidelines were launched, and countries were introduced to new AI tools to bolster climate resilience. Youssef Nassef, Director of Adaptation at UN Climate Change, emphasized the necessity of funding adaptation efforts, citing the need for around USD 300 billion annually by 2030 to avert the devastating consequences of climate change.
Zambia’s Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Mike Elton Mposha, stressed the importance of transforming NAPs into attractive investment plans, engaging various stakeholders, including women, children, youth, and the private sector. Douty Chibamba, Permanent Secretary of Zambia’s Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, highlighted the critical role of water in combating the impacts of climate change.
The Expo, attended by representatives from 80 countries, saw the launch of updated technical guidelines to assist nations in designing and implementing their NAPs in alignment with the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA). Sessions at the event focused on mobilizing financing for NAPs, leveraging digital technologies like AI, and promoting inclusive stakeholder engagement.
Fumukazi Zilanie Kamgundanga Gondwe, an Indigenous leader from Malawi, underscored the importance of traditional practices in addressing climate challenges. Ana Toni, CEO of COP30 in Brazil, called for a shift towards innovative solutions to combat climate change and protect the planet.
Climate Week in Addis Ababa, scheduled for September, will provide another opportunity to advance adaptation and resilience efforts. The event will bring together stakeholders to address financing needs, mitigation strategies, and the transition to a more sustainable future.
The NAP Expo serves as a platform for countries to exchange experiences, form partnerships, and mobilize support for NAP formulation and implementation. With near-universal membership, the UNFCCC plays a crucial role in coordinating global efforts to combat climate change and protect vulnerable communities.
As the world grapples with the escalating impacts of climate change, events like the NAP Expo and Climate Week are instrumental in driving collective action to build a more resilient and sustainable future for all.
