The University of Ghana has taken a significant step towards alleviating the ongoing housing challenges on campus with the commissioning of its latest student accommodation facility, the Diamond Jubilee Hall. This new facility comes as a response to the recurring accommodation shortage that has been a major concern, especially for first-year students at the university.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo spearheaded the construction of the Diamond Jubilee Hall, which is part of a series of projects initiated to enhance the student experience. The hall, which cost GHS 55 million and was funded entirely through the University’s Internally Generated Funds (IGF), features a total of 248 rooms. These include 64 rooms with shared bathrooms and 184 double rooms with shared washroom facilities on each floor.
In addition to the living quarters, the Diamond Jubilee Hall is equipped with modern amenities to cater to the needs of the students. Each floor includes four kitchenettes, reading rooms, a dedicated TV room, individual electricity meters for each room, and management offices. There is also a maintenance unit to ensure that the facility is well-maintained for the residents.
Looking ahead, the University plans to further enhance student convenience by adding a washing bay and mini-mart to the premises in the coming months. Speaking at the commissioning event, Vice-Chancellor Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo expressed the importance of the project in improving the overall student experience. She acknowledged the challenges faced during the construction process, including legal issues such as the Africa Integras litigation, which initially hindered potential investors.
Despite these obstacles, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized the University’s commitment to providing quality accommodation for its students. She assured students that the Diamond Jubilee Hall would soon be available for occupancy, with details on the application process to be communicated in due course. Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo urged students to take responsibility for the new facility and make the most of the resources provided.
The commissioning of the Diamond Jubilee Hall marks a significant milestone in addressing the accommodation crisis at the University of Ghana. With this new facility, more students will have access to comfortable and modern housing on campus, enhancing their overall academic experience.
