The latest survey results among Latino voters show a significant shift in their support for President Donald Trump, with his favorability ratings taking a hit among independents and women. The survey, conducted by Global Strategy Group and commissioned by Somos Votantes, a Democratic-leaning organization focused on Latinos, reveals a notable decline in Trump’s approval ratings among this demographic.
Among independents, Trump’s approval rating dropped from 43 percent in February to 29 percent in May. Overall, his approval among Latinos decreased from 43 percent to 39 percent over the same period. The survey, which polled 800 Hispanic/Latino registered voters nationwide between May 8 and May 18, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent.
In addition to the decline in approval ratings, Latino voters are expressing growing dissatisfaction with Trump’s handling of the economy. Only 38 percent of those surveyed viewed his economic policies positively, with even lower approval ratings among independents (26 percent) and women (30 percent).
Melissa Morales, president of Somos Votantes, highlighted the rapid erosion of trust in Trump’s economic policies among Latino voters, emphasizing that his initial gains in this demographic were largely based on promises of economic improvement. However, the survey indicates that 56 percent of respondents believe the economy is worsening under Trump’s administration, while only 19 percent think it is improving.
Morales suggested that many Latino voters may have supported Trump in the past election not because they aligned with his policies, but because they sought change and economic improvement. As the president’s approval ratings decline among this demographic, Republicans are still optimistic about their chances with Hispanic and Latino voters in the upcoming midterms.
The National Republican Congressional Committee recently launched a Spanish-language ad campaign targeting House Democrats in Hispanic-heavy districts, aiming to build on Trump’s inroads with Latino voters. Despite these efforts, Somos Votantes believes there is a significant disconnect between what Hispanic/Latino voters want from their elected officials and what they perceive the current administration and Republicans are delivering.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how Latino voters will ultimately shape the outcome of future elections and whether Trump’s recent decline in support among this demographic will have lasting implications for his presidency.
