Trump Signs Executive Order Promoting School Choice

President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order aimed at promoting school choice for families across the nation. The order comes in response to the latest test score data, which shows that students have struggled to recover from the disruptions caused by the pandemic-related school closures.

The executive order emphasizes the importance of providing families with schooling options, particularly in cases where the public education system is failing to meet their needs. It cites the success of universal K-12 scholarship programs in more than a dozen states, which allow families to choose the best educational setting for their children.

According to the order, educational choice and competition are key factors in driving education reform and improving student achievement. Research has shown that well-designed education-freedom programs not only benefit the students who participate in them but also encourage nearby public schools to enhance their performance.

However, critics of school choice measures have questioned the validity of the research cited in Trump’s executive order. Some argue that the evidence supporting school voucher programs is outdated, industry-backed, and based on exaggerated claims of positive results.

In addition to the executive order, the Department of Education recently announced its support for National School Choice Week. The administration’s policy is clear: to empower parents in making decisions about their children’s education and upbringing.

The executive order mandates that the secretary of Education provide guidance to states on using federal funds to support school initiatives and prioritize education freedom in the allocation of federal grants. It also calls for other agencies to review and expand school choice programs.

In conclusion, President Trump’s executive order on school choice reflects his commitment to empowering families and improving the education system. By promoting educational options and encouraging competition among schools, the administration aims to enhance student achievement and ensure that all children have access to quality education.
