President Donald Trump recently expressed his surprise and discontent with Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s recent escalation of attacks on Ukraine. In a statement made to reporters at the airport in New Jersey before boarding Air Force One to return to Washington, Trump stated, “I’m not happy with what Putin is doing. He’s killing a lot of people. And I don’t know what the hell happened to Putin.”

The conflict in Ukraine escalated when Russia launched 367 drones and missiles at Ukrainian cities overnight into May 25, marking the largest aerial attack since the war began in February 2022. The attack resulted in the death of a dozen people and occurred just hours before the final prisoner swap between Russia and Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of intentionally prolonging the war and called on the United States and European countries to impose further sanctions to pressure Russia. Zelenskyy emphasized the need for strong international pressure to stop the brutality of the Russian leadership.

President Trump also criticized Putin’s actions on the Truth Social platform, warning that any attempt by Russia to conquer the entirety of Ukraine would lead to the downfall of Russia. Trump also urged Zelenskyy to change his approach, stating that the Ukrainian President was not doing any favors for his country with his current rhetoric.

U.S. envoy Keith Kellogg condemned the Russian attacks as “shameful” and called for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine to protect innocent civilians. The prisoner swap between Russia and Ukraine was completed as part of a deal signed last month, with each side agreeing to release 1,000 prisoners of war captured during the conflict.

The Trump administration has been advocating for a ceasefire deal to end the war in Ukraine. While Putin remains open to a ceasefire and peaceful settlement, there are still unresolved issues that need to be addressed. Zelenskyy has expressed readiness to enter into a temporary ceasefire with Russia but emphasized the need for Russia to demonstrate a genuine commitment to ending the war.
