US President Donald Trump expressed skepticism on Monday about the ceasefire deal in Gaza, despite his efforts to secure it before his inauguration. As he returned to the White House, Trump was asked by a reporter if he believed the two sides would uphold the truce and move forward with the agreement. In response, Trump stated, “I’m not confident.”

Trump acknowledged that the conflict in Gaza was not the United States’ war, but rather a conflict between the two parties involved. However, he voiced his concerns about the sustainability of the ceasefire. Despite his doubts, Trump highlighted his belief that Hamas had been weakened during the recent conflict, which began with an unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Describing the devastation in Gaza as a “massive demolition site,” Trump emphasized the potential for reconstruction and development in the region. He praised Gaza’s location by the sea, its favorable weather, and the possibilities for creating beautiful infrastructure.

The ceasefire deal, which involved the exchange of hostages and prisoners, was initially proposed by former President Joe Biden in May. It was eventually implemented through joint diplomacy efforts by both Biden and Trump. While advocating for the agreement, Trump reiterated his unwavering support for Israel.

In a departure from Biden’s optimistic outlook on the ceasefire, Trump expressed doubt about the future of the accord. Despite Biden’s confidence in the agreement’s prospects, Trump raised concerns about the potential for Hamas to regroup and disrupt the peace.

During his inaugural address, Trump highlighted the ceasefire as an example of his role as a “peacemaker.” He underscored his commitment to resolving conflicts and bringing about stability in the region. Additionally, at a rally following his address, Trump welcomed family members of hostages still held in Gaza, emphasizing the importance of addressing the humanitarian aspects of the conflict.

In conclusion, while Trump’s skepticism contrasts with Biden’s optimism, the implementation of the ceasefire remains a significant development in the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Trump’s focus on reconstruction and peacebuilding efforts underscores the complexities of the situation and the challenges ahead.
