Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo have come together to sign a historic peace agreement in Washington, with the aim of putting an end to support for armed groups that have been causing chaos and destruction in the region. This agreement, brokered through Qatar, is a significant step towards bringing peace and stability to the region.

The conflict between the two countries has claimed thousands of lives, and it has been a long and bloody struggle. However, with this new agreement in place, there is hope that the cycle of violence can be broken, and a new era of peace and cooperation can begin.

President Trump, who hosted the foreign ministers of Rwanda and the DRC at the White House, hailed the agreement as a turning point in the region. He also celebrated the potential for access to mineral wealth, which has been a source of conflict between the two nations in the past.

The peace agreement comes in the wake of M23’s rapid advances in eastern DRC, which have caused significant concern and raised fears of further violence and instability. While the agreement does not address all of the territorial gains made by M23, it is a crucial first step towards resolving the conflict and restoring peace.

To provide further insight and analysis on this important development, FRANCE 24’s Gavin Lee is joined by Michela Wrong, a renowned journalist and author who specializes in contemporary Africa. With her expertise and deep understanding of the region, Michela offers valuable insights into the significance of the peace agreement and what it means for the future of Rwanda and the DRC.

Overall, the signing of this peace agreement is a positive step towards ending the conflict and violence that have plagued the region for far too long. It is a testament to the power of diplomacy and negotiation in resolving even the most entrenched and complex conflicts, and offers hope for a brighter future for the people of Rwanda and the DRC.
