African countries are making significant progress in infrastructure, industrialization, and innovation, as indicated by their high SDG 9 ranking. SDG 9, which focuses on “Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure,” is crucial for nations looking to achieve social inclusion, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.

There is a direct link between a country’s ability to drive economic development and its high SDG 9 score. Investing in energy, transportation, and communication infrastructure not only reduces transaction costs but also boosts productivity and attracts both local and international investments.

African nations are in a position to diversify their economies and address challenges like climate change, food security, and public health crises by fostering innovative ecosystems. For instance, by investing in digital infrastructure, governments can leapfrog traditional growth stages and provide universal access to e-commerce, fintech, and e-governance.

One prime example of successful SDG 9-related investments is Kenya’s thriving digital landscape, supported by innovation hubs and widespread mobile connectivity. Beyond Kenya, several other African countries are excelling in both innovation and infrastructure, as highlighted in the Financing Africa report by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.

According to the report, here are the top 10 African countries with the best infrastructure and most innovation:

1. South Africa – SDG 9 rating: 70.8
2. Egypt – SDG 9 rating: 57.9
3. Tunisia – SDG 9 rating: 55.9
4. Morocco – SDG 9 rating: 55.1
5. Algeria – SDG 9 rating: 53.9
6. Botswana – SDG 9 rating: 53.5
7. Mauritius – SDG 9 rating: 51.8
8. Ghana – SDG 9 rating: 46.8
9. Cabo Verde – SDG 9 rating: 41.0
10. Eswatini – SDG 9 rating: 40.9

These countries are not only excelling in infrastructure development but also fostering a culture of innovation, setting them on a path towards sustainable growth and global competitiveness. By prioritizing SDG 9, African nations can continue to make strides in building a prosperous and resilient future for their citizens.
