TikTok has recently launched the second phase of its #SaferTogether online safety programme in collaboration with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and Data Science Nigeria. This initiative aims to establish a comprehensive digital safety network within Nigerian communities, focusing on educating and protecting users in the online space.

The initial phase of the programme, which was introduced in 2022, successfully reached 537 teachers and 1,037 parents in major cities like Abuja, Lagos, and Kano. It primarily focused on digital safety features and mental health awareness. Building on this success, the expanded second phase now includes NITDA as a strategic partner to enhance the programme’s impact and scope.

The collaboration with NITDA is intended to address critical digital challenges faced by young people today, such as misinformation, cyberbullying, digital citizenship, fake news, and data protection. Workshops will be conducted with various stakeholders, including civil society organizations, government representatives, and community leaders. The programme will also expand its reach to additional regions, specifically targeting Edo and Kaduna states.

Data Science Nigeria will play a crucial role in developing content and curriculum for the initiative. Dr. Olubayo Adekanmbi, the organization’s founder, emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in creating a safer digital environment. TikTok’s approach to online safety includes social media outreach, workshops, and strategic partnerships, with its Trust and Safety team guiding content development to ensure the creation of relevant educational materials.

The programme also provides extensive resources for parents and guardians through TikTok’s Safety Centre and Guardian’s Guide, offering updated information and best practices for digital safety. NITDA’s involvement aligns with broader goals of digital literacy and technological infrastructure development, aiming to enhance cybersecurity awareness and promote positive digital engagement among Nigerian communities.

The initiative emphasizes education over restriction, teaching critical skills for safe and responsible internet use. By fostering collaboration between technology companies, government agencies, and community organizations, the #SaferTogether campaign aims to create a comprehensive support network for digital wellness. Initiatives like these are becoming increasingly crucial as digital technologies continue to evolve, showcasing the importance of proactive approaches to addressing digital safety challenges.

Overall, TikTok’s partnership with NITDA and Data Science Nigeria serves as a model for comprehensive digital literacy efforts, demonstrating how strategic partnerships can lead to meaningful change in online safety education. The programme represents a holistic approach to digital wellness, recognizing the complex nature of online interactions and the need for ongoing education and support in navigating the digital landscape.
