Inter Milan secured a crucial 2-0 away victory against Feyenoord in the Champions League last-16 matchup, thanks to goals from Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez.
The game started with Feyenoord looking more dangerous, but it was Inter who took the lead against the run of play. Thuram’s acrobatic volley in the 38th minute and Martinez’s powerful strike into the top corner early in the second half gave the Italian side a comfortable lead.
Despite Feyenoord’s strong counterattacks, Inter goalkeeper Josep Martinez was alert and made crucial saves to keep his team in the game. Thuram opened the scoring with a close-range finish from a cross by Nicolo Barella, showcasing excellent teamwork.
Martinez doubled Inter’s lead with his sixth goal of the season, becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer in the Champions League with 18 goals. The Argentine’s clinical finishing gave Inter a commanding position in the tie.
Feyenoord had a chance to get back into the game when they hit the crossbar, but Inter’s defense held firm. Thuram won a penalty for Inter, but Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther saved Piotr Zielinski’s spot-kick to keep the scoreline at 2-0.
The result dampened Feyenoord’s hopes of reaching the Champions League quarterfinals for the first time since 1971–72, especially with new manager Robin van Persie at the helm. On the other hand, Inter, three-time European champions, continued their resurgence in the competition after a decade-long absence from the knockout stages.
The victory sets up an exciting clash for Inter, who will face either Bayern Munich or Bayer Leverkusen in the next round. With their solid performance against Feyenoord, Inter will be confident of progressing further in the tournament and potentially adding to their illustrious European history.
