Arsenal legend Ian Wright has not held back in his criticism of Thomas Partey following the midfielder’s costly defensive error in the Gunners’ recent 2-2 draw with Aston Villa. The Ghanaian international’s mistake allowed Ollie Watkins to snatch a late equalizer, much to the frustration of Arsenal fans and pundits alike.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Wright described Partey’s error as “unforgivable,” even though he acknowledged that the midfielder was playing out of position at right-back. “He [Thomas Partey] is not a natural right-back, and that’s understandable,” Wright stated. “But as a professional, he should have sensed the danger and stuck with Watkins. At this level, such mistakes are inexcusable and it cost Arsenal a crucial win.”

The draw leaves Arsenal trailing six points behind league leaders Liverpool FC, adding further pressure to their title aspirations.

In response to the criticism, Partey has defended his versatility, emphasizing his commitment to adapting to any role assigned by manager Mikel Arteta. “I think the answer is clear – I’m in a team where we all play for each other,” Partey said. “I’m very comfortable playing in any position to give my best for the team.”

Despite the backlash, Partey’s adaptability has been a key asset for Arsenal this season, with Arteta utilizing him in various positions to tackle tactical challenges.

Looking ahead, Arsenal will now shift their focus to the UEFA Champions League as they prepare to face Dinamo Zagreb at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, January 22. The Gunners will be aiming to secure a crucial victory on the European stage following their Premier League setback.

As Arsenal navigates through a challenging period, Partey’s willingness to adapt and contribute wherever needed will be crucial in their quest for success both domestically and in Europe. Fans will hope that the midfielder can bounce back from his recent mistake and play a vital role in the team’s upcoming fixtures.
