This is the new progressive strategy for warring with Trump

Progressive Democrats are facing a new challenge as they grapple with the potential of a second Donald Trump presidency. The strategy they are considering involves taking Trump’s populist, working-class proposals seriously, at least on the surface. By doing so, they hope to either claim credit for influencing his policies or criticize him if he fails to deliver on his promises.

This shift in approach is a departure from the previous stance of outright opposition to Trump. Figures like Rep. Pramila Jayapal, Sen. Richard Blumenthal, and Sen. Bernie Sanders are indicating a willingness to work with Trump on certain issues, such as antitrust measures and capping credit card interest rates. Even staunch critics like Sen. Elizabeth Warren are open to collaborating with the president-elect on shared objectives.

However, progressive lawmakers are quick to clarify that they will continue to oppose Trump on the majority of his agenda items. They see potential areas of alignment on issues that benefit the working class, such as affordable healthcare and economic reforms. They are prepared to challenge Trump to fulfill his promises and hold him accountable if he falls short.

Despite their reservations about Trump’s character and policies, progressives acknowledge that some of his campaign pledges align with their own goals. They are willing to engage with him on issues like reducing healthcare costs, protecting Social Security and Medicare, and enforcing antitrust laws. They are also looking for opportunities to push for progressive policies, even in a divided government.

While some progressives are cautious about trusting Trump’s intentions, others see value in exploring areas of common ground. They recognize the need to advocate for policies that benefit working-class Americans, even if it means working with an administration they fundamentally oppose. The focus is on advancing policies that improve the lives of ordinary people, regardless of the political landscape.

In the face of a Republican-controlled Congress and a polarized political environment, progressives are navigating a complex strategy of selective cooperation and principled opposition. They are seeking to leverage any opportunity to advance their agenda while remaining vigilant against threats to democracy and social justice. The evolving approach reflects a pragmatic response to the challenges of a second Trump presidency.
