The unveiling of the new Betway Premiership trophy designed by artist Nelson Makamo has sparked a range of reactions from local soccer fans. After months of anticipation, the trophy was revealed following Mamelodi Sundowns’ league victory over Magesi.

While some fans, particularly those supporting Sundowns, have expressed admiration for the new design, others have raised concerns and criticisms. Many fans have likened the trophy’s appearance to a hookah pipe, leading to a wave of social media commentary and memes poking fun at the design.

In response to the mixed reactions, Betway, the league sponsors, directed inquiries to the PSL, who have yet to comment on the matter. Despite the controversy, Makamo shared his inspiration behind the trophy’s design in a video with former soccer players Oupa Manyisa, Mpho Makola, Lucky Lekgwathi, and Lehlohonolo Majoro.

The artist emphasized the importance of including the player and supporter in the trophy design, as they are integral to the league’s success. Makamo also highlighted the significance of incorporating gold into the trophy, a departure from the traditional silver and bronze elements commonly found in trophies.

Former Mamelodi Sundowns Captain Hlompho Kekana expressed his appreciation for the trophy, emphasizing the importance of a design that resonates with players, fans, and the history of South African football. Makamo’s vision for the trophy was to create something symbolic that celebrates South Africa’s soccer heritage and offers therapy to fans during challenging times.

In a promotional video, Makamo discussed the significance of complementing the achievement of being number one with a trophy that reflects the country’s culture and identity. Despite the impatience of soccer fans eager to see the trophy, Makamo remained committed to creating a design that embodies the spirit of South African soccer.
