Coughing can be a nuisance, disrupting daily activities and making it challenging to get a good night’s sleep. While a cough is commonly associated with upper respiratory illnesses like a cold or the flu, there are various reasons why you may be experiencing it right now. Dr. Inna Husain, a medical director of otolaryngology, explains that a cough is a protective mechanism to expel irritants from the airways, caused by factors such as postnasal drip, allergies, asthma, lung infection, or gastroesophageal reflux disease.

According to a systematic review and meta-analysis in 2021, most people recover from a cough within nine to 11 days, but not everyone experiences complete relief after two weeks. It can be frustrating to deal with a lingering cough, so it’s essential to explore effective home remedies to alleviate it. Additionally, reducing coughing and throat clearing is crucial to prevent airway hypersensitivity and further exacerbation of symptoms.

One effective home remedy for a cough is to keep the air moist. Dr. Husain recommends using a cool-mist humidifier to add moisture to the air, relieving dryness that can contribute to coughing. Placing a humidifier in your workspace and bedroom can help reduce nighttime coughing.

Sipping warm liquids, such as tea or broth, can also provide relief for a cough. Dr. Jen Caudle, a family physician, suggests that warm liquids can be soothing and may help alleviate cough symptoms. Studies have shown that hot beverages can provide immediate relief for cold and flu symptoms, including cough.

Honey is another natural remedy that may help reduce cough frequency and severity. Research published in BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine in 2022 indicates that honey can be effective in managing cough symptoms when paired with hot herbal tea. However, it’s essential to note that honey is not suitable for children under the age of 1 due to the risk of botulism.

Staying hydrated by drinking fluids is crucial in thinning mucus and keeping tissues moist, reducing irritation from coughing. Fluids help alleviate symptoms and support the body’s natural healing process. Hot herbal tea with honey or plain water are excellent choices for staying hydrated and soothing a cough.

If your cough is accompanied by nasal symptoms like a runny or stuffy nose, nasal irrigation may be beneficial in reducing postnasal drip. Dr. Husain recommends focusing on a nasal regimen to address the underlying cause of the cough and alleviate associated symptoms.

In conclusion, managing a cough with home remedies can provide relief and support the body’s healing process. By incorporating these natural remedies and lifestyle changes, you can effectively alleviate cough symptoms and improve overall respiratory health. If cough symptoms persist or worsen, it’s essential to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation and treatment.

  • Nasal saline irrigation is a popular method for relieving congestion and clearing out mucus from the nasal passages. One effective way to perform nasal saline irrigation is by using a Neti pot. According to experts, the Neti pot helps pull mucus forward, preventing it from dripping down the throat, which can lead to discomfort and irritation.

One recommended product for nasal saline irrigation is NeilMed’s NasaFlo Neti Pot, available for purchase at Target for $14.99. When using a Neti pot or any nasal irrigation device, it is crucial to follow the instructions carefully. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration advises using distilled, sterile, or previously boiled water to prevent harmful organisms from causing infections in the nasal passages. Tap water may contain these organisms, so it is best to avoid using it for nasal irrigation.

Experts recommend performing nasal rinses with a Neti pot one to three times per day to effectively clear out mucus and alleviate congestion. Nasal saline irrigation can be particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing colds, allergies, or sinus issues.

In addition to nasal saline irrigation, elevating your head while sleeping can help alleviate coughing at night. By using an extra pillow or a wedge pillow, you can reduce postnasal drip and prevent nighttime reflux, which are common causes of nighttime coughing.

When dealing with a cough, it is essential to be mindful of certain factors that can exacerbate the condition. Avoiding carbonated beverages, spicy or crunchy foods, as well as irritants like smoke and dust, can help prevent further irritation of the throat and airways. For individuals with allergies, asthma, or acid reflux, it is crucial to avoid triggers that may worsen coughing episodes.

To prevent a cough from becoming chronic, it is important to manage underlying conditions such as allergies, asthma, or acid reflux effectively. By seeking proper diagnosis and treatment, individuals can address the root cause of their cough and find relief.

If a cough persists for more than a few weeks or is accompanied by wheezing or shortness of breath, it is advisable to consult a doctor. Persistent coughing may indicate a more serious underlying issue that requires medical attention. It is essential to address the underlying cause of a cough to effectively treat the symptoms and promote respiratory health.

In conclusion, nasal saline irrigation with a Neti pot, along with proper elevation of the head while sleeping and avoidance of irritants, can help alleviate coughing and promote respiratory comfort. By following these recommendations and seeking medical advice when necessary, individuals can effectively manage cough symptoms and improve their overall well-being. Two recent studies have shed light on the potential benefits of natural remedies for treating common cold and flu symptoms. The first study, conducted by Sanu and Eccles in 2008, explored the effects of a hot drink on nasal airflow and symptoms of the common cold and flu. The researchers found that consuming a hot drink can help improve nasal airflow and alleviate symptoms associated with these respiratory infections.

In a similar vein, a systematic review and meta-analysis conducted by Abuelgasim, Albury, and Lee in 2021 examined the effectiveness of honey for symptomatic relief in upper respiratory tract infections. The study concluded that honey can provide relief from symptoms such as coughing and congestion in individuals suffering from these infections. The researchers recommended the use of honey as a natural remedy for managing upper respiratory tract infections.

Furthermore, a systematic review conducted by Kuitunen and Renko in 2023 focused specifically on the use of honey for acute cough in children. The researchers found that honey can be an effective treatment for relieving cough symptoms in children and recommended its use as a safe and natural alternative to traditional cough medications.

These studies highlight the potential benefits of incorporating natural remedies like hot drinks and honey into the treatment of common cold and flu symptoms. By leveraging the healing properties of these natural ingredients, individuals may be able to alleviate their symptoms and improve their overall well-being without relying on harsh medications. It is important to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new treatment regimen, especially for children or individuals with underlying health conditions.
