Telecom Egypt and Mobily Join Forces to Launch Saudi-Egypt Submarine Cable

In a groundbreaking move, Saudi Arabian TMT company Mobily and Telecom Egypt have inked a cooperation agreement to lay down the first Saudi submarine cable connecting the Kingdom to Egypt. This strategic partnership aims to boost regional connectivity and strengthen communication links between the Middle East and Europe.

The upcoming cable, a project solely owned by Mobily, will traverse the Red Sea, establishing a direct connection between Saudi Arabia and Egypt. With multiple connection points in place, the cable will also pave the way for potential expansion into Europe. The cable is set to land at two designated cable landing stations in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, and Duba, Saudi Arabia.

Mobily CEO Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al-Badran expressed his excitement about the agreement, emphasizing the company’s dedication to expanding its infrastructure and capabilities on both regional and international fronts. Al-Badran stated, "Mobily’s new cable will connect Saudi Arabia to Egypt and enhance communication flexibility between the Middle East and Europe."

On the other hand, Telecom Egypt’s managing director and CEO, Mohamed Nasr, hailed the agreement as a significant milestone in advancing the joint plans of the two companies. The partnership comes at a time when the African and Middle Eastern regions are witnessing a surge in subsea cable development.

In January 2024, Telecom Egypt and Zain Omantel International (ZOI) collaborated to establish a new digital corridor connecting the Mediterranean to the Arabian Sea and Arabian Gulf. Similarly, in May 2024, Angola Cables and Cameroon’s Camtel teamed up to expand digital and connectivity services in Cameroon and the West Africa region. Additionally, Mauritius Telecom partnered with Orange and Reliance Jio to construct a new subsea cable linking Africa, Indian Ocean islands, and Asia.

These recent developments underscore the growing significance of robust subsea infrastructure in promoting digital connectivity and unlocking new opportunities for economic growth and collaboration across the region. The Telecom Egypt-Mobily partnership is well-positioned to play a key role in strengthening the digital backbone that connects Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and beyond, fostering enhanced regional and global integration.
