Teenage pregnancy remains a significant issue in South Africa, with the Ekurhuleni District in Gauteng reporting the highest number of teenage girls giving birth in public health facilities in the 2022/2023 period. The number has increased from 5,928 births the previous year to 6,670 births, indicating a concerning trend. This increase is not isolated to Ekurhuleni, as other regions such as Nelson Mandela Bay in the Eastern Cape have also seen a rise in teenage births since the 2018/2019 financial year. Nationally, estimates suggest that between 132,000 to 150,000 girls between the ages of 10 and 19 gave birth in the same period.

Mmatsie Tsotetsi, a prevention and programme manager at Aids Healthcare Foundation (AHF), highlighted the issue in Heidelberg, where 57 teenage girls fell pregnant between January and March. At an event hosted by AHF in Ratanda, Heidelberg, teenage girls, parents, and health workers discussed the challenges of teenage pregnancy openly. Tsotetsi emphasized the importance of parents engaging in honest conversations with their children about sexual and reproductive health.

One nurse at the event expressed concern that many teenagers do not access contraceptive services at clinics, despite their availability within 5 km of most homes in Ratanda. She noted that misconceptions about contraceptive use and the stigma of promiscuity associated with it may deter adolescents from seeking these services. Additionally, she highlighted the increased risks of HIV infection for pregnant teenagers who are not using protection.

Teenagers who attended the event shared their perspectives on teenage pregnancy. A 16-year-old emphasized the need for parental support and education on preventing pregnancy, especially in cases of sexual abuse. Another 15-year-old stressed the importance of delaying sexual debut to avoid peer pressure and its consequences, such as dropping out of school and facing social stigma.

Thoko Xuku, a 51-year-old parent, shared her experience of her daughter becoming pregnant at 16 and the lasting impact it had on her life. Xuku highlighted the responsibilities and limitations that come with teenage pregnancy, emphasizing the need for open communication about HIV and contraceptive options with adolescents.

Overall, the event shed light on the challenges and risks associated with teenage pregnancy, including increased vulnerability to HIV infection. Education, access to contraceptive services, and supportive parental involvement are crucial in addressing and preventing teenage pregnancies in South Africa. Efforts to empower young girls with knowledge and resources to make informed decisions about their sexual health are essential in reducing the high rates of teenage pregnancies in the country.
