Former NFF President Amaju Pinnick Reveals Super Eagles Set to Appoint New Head Coach
Amaju Pinnick, former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president and current FIFA Council member, has announced that the Super Eagles will soon have a new head coach. In an interview, Pinnick stated, “Any moment from now, I am sure they would be announcing a coach, an enterprising coach at that.”
The Super Eagles have been without a permanent coach since George Finidi’s departure in June 2024, following Jose Peseiro’s exit after Nigeria’s second-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Augustine Eguavoen has been serving as the interim coach, guiding the team to qualify for the 2025 AFCON. However, the NFF is eager to appoint a new head coach ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Nigeria currently occupies the fifth spot in Group C of the African qualification series, with three points from four games, trailing leaders Rwanda by four points. The tournament is scheduled to take place in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
Despite the current challenges, Pinnick remains hopeful about Nigeria’s chances. “We believe we would still qualify by God’s grace,” he remarked, acknowledging the difficult task but highlighting the team’s determination to succeed.
The Super Eagles have a storied history in the World Cup, debuting in 1994 and consistently qualifying since, except for 2006 and 2022. Pinnick expressed confidence in the team’s ability to make a return to the global stage.
