Mamelodi Sundowns Secure 3-0 Victory Over SuperSport United in Tshwane Derby
Wednesday night saw an exciting clash at the Lucas Moripe Stadium as Mamelodi Sundowns emerged victorious with a 3-0 win against their Tshwane derby rivals, SuperSport United, in a Betway Premiership game.
Heading into a crucial league matchup this weekend, the Brazilians maintained a six-point lead over Orlando Pirates, who also secured a win in their concurrent match against Sekhukhune United, thanks to goals from Jayden Adams and Tashreeq Matthews (two).
Unfortunately for SuperSport United, this loss marks their fourth consecutive league defeat, leaving them four points outside of the top eight in 12th position.
The match kicked off with Lucas Ribeiro testing the SuperSport goalkeeper, Thakasani Mbanjwa, in the seventh minute, only to see his shot deflected onto the post. Marcelo Allende missed the rebound opportunity, but it was Jayden Adams who opened the scoring for Sundowns four minutes later with a composed finish off a Zuko Mdunyelwa cross.
Sundowns came close to doubling their lead in the 19th minute when Peter Shalulile’s long-range effort struck the post. SuperSport threatened with a free kick that hit the woodwork, but it was Tashreeq Matthews who extended Sundowns’ lead to 2-0 just before halftime, capitalizing on a defensive error.
After the break, Matthews secured his brace in the 49th minute, with a deflected shot finding the back of the net following a brilliant run and cross from Lucas Ribeiro. Despite their efforts, SuperSport couldn’t find a way back into the game and were reduced to ten men in the 87th minute when Siyabonga Ndebele received his marching orders after a second yellow card.
Looking ahead, Mamelodi Sundowns will face Orlando Pirates on Saturday, February 8, while SuperSport United will take on Sekhukhune United the following day as they return to Betway Premiership action.
