Sudan’s Military Leader Proposes Roadmap for Constitutional Transition
Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, the military leader of Sudan, has put forward a plan for a constitutional transition in the country. The roadmap includes the formation of a transitional government, the appointment of a civilian prime minister, and the initiation of a national dialogue process to pave the way for future elections. This announcement comes amidst ongoing conflict between the military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that has been ongoing since April 2023.
Speaking at a summit in Cairo, Burhan also expressed Sudan’s solidarity with Palestine, rejecting US President Donald Trump’s proposal to depopulate Gaza and relocate Palestinians. Instead, Arab leaders at the summit endorsed Egypt’s $53 billion reconstruction plan for post-war efforts, a move welcomed by Hamas but dismissed by Israel. Despite the internal crisis in Sudan, the proposed roadmap presents a potential pathway towards civilian governance in the country.
