UN News: Ramtane Lamamra’s Efforts Towards Peace in Sudan

Ramtane Lamamra, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy For Sudan, recently embarked on a crucial mission to Sudan and Ethiopia in an effort to bring about peace and stability to the region. During his visit, Lamamra met with key government officials in Sudan, including General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council of Sudan and the Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces. He also engaged with a delegation from the Rapid Support Forces in Ethiopia.

In an interview with UN News, Lamamra expressed his optimism about the progress made during his visit, highlighting the support extended to his mission and the commitment of Sudanese officials to work with the UN towards achieving peace in the country. While acknowledging that there have been no significant breakthroughs yet, Lamamra emphasized the UN’s unwavering dedication to helping the Sudanese people end their suffering and attain stability, security, democratic governance, and development.

Lamamra also stressed the importance of engaging with Sudanese civil society groups, including women, youth, and marginalized voices, in order to address the humanitarian crisis and pave the way for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. He underscored the need for all parties involved to prioritize the interests of the Sudanese people and recognize that a military solution is not viable.

As the conflict in Sudan enters its 20th month with no end in sight, Lamamra called for a ceasefire to halt the bloodshed and facilitate a negotiated agreement through a credible, inclusive political process led by Sudanese stakeholders. He urged global and regional actors to exert pressure on the belligerent parties and their supporters to embrace peace and avoid further devastation in the region.

Lamamra’s unwavering commitment to advancing peace in Sudan serves as a beacon of hope for the Sudanese people who have endured immense suffering due to the prolonged conflict. As he continues to engage with all stakeholders involved, Lamamra remains steadfast in his pursuit of a peaceful resolution that safeguards the unity, territorial integrity, and well-being of Sudan and its people.
