Stormers face anxious wait over Damian Willemse ban

The Stormers are facing a nerve-wracking wait to discover the outcome of Damian Willemse’s red card incident during their recent victory over Cardiff in the United Rugby Championship (URC) pool match. Willemse was shown a red card for a high tackle on Gabriel Hamer-Webb, which could potentially have serious consequences for the player and the team.

If Willemse receives a ban that rules him out of the URC playoffs, it could also impact his return to the international stage. The talented flyhalf last played for the Springboks in the 2023 World Cup final and missed the entire international season last year due to injuries. His anticipated return against Italy and Georgia in July may be jeopardized if a ban is imposed and the Stormers do not progress in the URC playoffs.

Despite the unintentional nature of the tackle and the low force involved, Willemse may still face significant consequences. Stormers Director of Rugby, John Dobson, acknowledged the potential disaster of losing Willemse and expressed willingness to consider an appeal depending on the outcome.

The absence of Willemse could present a selection opportunity for Dobson, with Manie Libbok impressing in his return from injury and Warrick Gelant ready to reclaim his fullback position. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu could also feature in the midfield in Willemse’s absence.

The decision on Willemse’s ban is eagerly awaited by the Stormers and their supporters, as it will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the team’s URC playoff campaign and potentially on Willemse’s international comeback. The team will be on tenterhooks until the final verdict is delivered.
