St. Thomas Eye Hospital was recently honored as the Best Eye Hospital at the 9th Ghana CEO Summit, which took place on May 26 at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra. This prestigious recognition highlights the hospital’s dedication to providing exceptional eye care services and its significant impact on Ghana’s healthcare sector.
Led by Dr. Michael Ekuoba Gyasi, the Medical Director and CEO, St. Thomas Eye Hospital has emerged as a leader in innovative and compassionate ophthalmology care. Originally established as the North Western Eye Centre in 2010 and rebranded in 2014, the hospital has been at the forefront of pioneering advanced surgical techniques such as phacoemulsification cataract surgery and micro-incisional vitrectomy, setting new benchmarks in eye care across Ghana.
Dr. Gyasi’s visionary leadership extends beyond clinical excellence. He has played a key role in establishing international partnerships with organizations like Unite for Sight, Charity Vision International, Bright Sight Mission, and the New England Medical Centre at Tufts University. These partnerships have enabled the hospital to provide annual advanced vitreoretinal surgical services to patients who may not have been able to afford such procedures otherwise.
Furthermore, Dr. Gyasi’s advocacy efforts have resulted in a generous donation of state-of-the-art eye equipment from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, enhancing the hospital’s diagnostic and surgical capabilities.
In addition to its clinical achievements, St. Thomas Eye Hospital is committed to social responsibility through its outreach programs. The hospital has conducted over 10,000 free sight restoration surgeries and screened more than 200,000 individuals for various eye diseases, ensuring that no one loses their sight due to financial constraints.
The Ghana CEO Summit is a premier platform for business leaders, policymakers, and industry experts to engage in discussions aimed at driving economic transformation. This year’s summit, themed “Leading Ghana’s Economic Reset: Transforming Business and Governance for a Sustainable, Futuristic Economy,” emphasized the importance of leadership and innovation in shaping Ghana’s future.
The recognition of St. Thomas Eye Hospital at the summit not only celebrates its past accomplishments but also sets a standard for excellence in Ghana’s healthcare industry. As Ghana continues to prioritize quality healthcare delivery, institutions like St. Thomas Eye Hospital demonstrate the positive impact of dedication, innovation, and community engagement in improving healthcare outcomes for all.
