The upcoming clash between the Springboks and Italy at Loftus this weekend promises to be an exciting start to the 2025 international season for the South African team. Coach Rassie Erasmus has named a strong team for the match, with some key players returning to the lineup.

One notable change sees Eben Etzebeth partnering with Lood de Jager in the second row, marking their first time playing together in over two years. Handre Polllard has also been brought in at flyhalf, while Damian Willemse returns at fullback for the first time since the 2023 Rugby World Cup final. Other changes include Wilco Louw at tighthead prop and Jasper Wiese at eighthman.

Jesse Kriel will continue to captain the team, making him the 67th captain of the Springboks. Vincent Tshituka will make his official debut in the number seven jersey, while veteran Willie le Roux is set to earn his 99th cap when he comes off the bench.

Erasmus emphasized the importance of starting the season on a positive note and settling the squad. With Italy fielding some new players, the Springboks are keen to analyze their opponents and adapt accordingly. The coach also mentioned that regular captain Siya Kolisi has been sidelined due to a stiff neck and Achilles niggle, but assures that the injuries are not serious.

Looking ahead, the Springboks are focused on ensuring that their players do not exceed eight or nine matches this year to prevent fatigue and injuries. The team is determined to make a strong start against Italy and carry that momentum into the rest of their campaign.

Overall, the Springboks are prepared to face Italy at Loftus this weekend and are eager to showcase their skills and determination on the field. With a mix of experienced players and fresh talent, the team is confident in their abilities to secure a victory and set the tone for what promises to be an exciting international season ahead.
