The 2025 Democracy Cup trophy has been officially handed over to the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, in anticipation of the upcoming match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics. The match, which has been rescheduled to September 5, 2025, will take place at the University of Ghana Stadium.
During the presentation ceremony, Speaker Bagbin highlighted the significance of Ghana’s democracy and the role of football in promoting national unity and civic education. He emphasized the initiative’s aim to utilize football’s popularity to enhance public understanding of governance in the country.
In his address, Speaker Bagbin distinguished Ghana’s democratic system from other nations, emphasizing that sovereignty in Ghana rests with the people, unlike in the United Kingdom where it lies with Parliament. He also announced the event’s title sponsor, kgL group, limited, expressing gratitude for their support.
Reflecting on football’s global impact on Ghana, Bagbin shared personal experiences and expressed ambitions to involve parliamentarians and the Ghana Education Service in identifying football talents from a young age. He also revealed plans to present the trophy to other arms of government, including President John Dramani Mahama.
The event’s relocation to the University of Ghana Stadium was motivated by a desire to provide optimal facilities, security, and a premier experience for spectators, players, and supporters nationwide.
Overall, the Democracy Cup serves as a platform for celebrating Ghana’s democracy, promoting unity through football, and fostering collaboration among different sectors of society. The upcoming match promises to be an exciting showcase of talent and sportsmanship, further highlighting the intersection of football and governance in the country.
