The State of the Nation Address (Sona) red carpet is not just a walkway, but a runway of power, prestige, and political statements. As South Africa’s leaders, dignitaries, and VIPs gather at Cape Town’s City Hall for Sona 2025, all eyes are on their fashion choices, which range from bold traditional attire to sleek designer ensembles.

The red carpet event kicked off at 5:00 PM, with notable figures making their grand entrance. Executive Mayor of the City of Cape Town, Mr. Geordin Hill-Lewis, and his wife Carla Hill-Lewis arrived in style, setting the tone for the evening. Former Deputy President, Ms. Baleka Mbete, and her husband, Mr. Moses Mokgatle Khomo also made a striking appearance, turning heads with their fashion choices.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza, and National Council of Provinces Chairperson Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane arrived in coordinated outfits, showcasing unity and solidarity. Chief Justice Mandisa Maya and Former President Kgalema Montlante made a statement with their elegant attire, exuding grace and sophistication.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Dr. Annelie Lotriet added a touch of glamour to the red carpet, showcasing their impeccable sense of style. The guests were serenaded by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Music Band, adding a musical touch to the evening’s festivities.

The fashion choices on the red carpet varied from traditional South African attire to modern, chic ensembles. Parliament’s partnership with Proudly South African aimed to support the local fashion industry by encouraging guests to wear locally produced attire, promoting homegrown talent and creativity.

Notable figures like Shameemah Sallie from the Aljama-ah Muslim Political Party and fashion designer Palesa Mokubung made a bold statement with their unique and eye-catching outfits. The red carpet at Sona 2025 was not just a display of fashion, but a reflection of South Africa’s diverse and vibrant culture.

As the evening unfolded, it became clear that the fashion statements at Sona went beyond just clothes. They were a reflection of power, prestige, and political influence, setting trends and turning heads in the process. The red carpet at Sona 2025 was not just a runway, but a platform for expression and empowerment through fashion.
