Somalia Introduces New E-Visa Portal for International Travelers
Somalia has recently launched a cutting-edge e-visa system aimed at simplifying the visa application process for international travelers. This innovative platform, which went live on August 24, 2025, is expected to enhance border controls while boosting confidence among investors and business travelers.
Developed in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the e-visa portal enables visitors to apply for visas online, eliminating the need for embassy visits or manual paperwork. By digitizing the verification process, authorities believe that this system will not only facilitate entry for tourists and professionals but also strengthen security measures.
During the launch event in Mogadishu, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre emphasized that the new e-visa system reflects Somalia’s commitment to welcoming visitors from around the globe in a secure and transparent manner. This initiative aligns with the country’s broader digital transformation efforts, which have included the introduction of national ID cards, mobile money services, and the rollout of 5G technology.
In addition to the e-visa system, Somalia has made significant strides in digital innovation. In July 2025, the Central Bank of Somalia introduced SOMQR, a standardized national QR code for mobile payments, to streamline financial transactions. Furthermore, the country launched its first NFC-enabled wearable payment device, allowing users to make contactless payments effortlessly.
By implementing these digital advancements, Somalia is not only modernizing its public services and financial systems but also revolutionizing its approach to travel and immigration. The introduction of the e-visa portal signifies a shift towards proactive border management, enabling smoother entry for visitors while maintaining stringent security measures.
Overall, the launch of the e-visa system is expected to make traveling to Somalia more predictable and attractive for business professionals, investors, and members of the Somali diaspora. This proactive approach to border control highlights Somalia’s commitment to innovation and progress, setting a new standard for digital integration in the region.
