The Mepe Gbavie-Dekume sub-divisional chief, Togbe Kwasi Amedor III, has raised alarm over a contagious skin disease outbreak affecting numerous children and adults in Avetakpo enclave, a farming community in the Volta Region of Ghana.
Reports from the chief indicate that the infected individuals are suffering from sleep deprivation, severe bodily pains, and prolonged discomfort.
Despite the severity of the outbreak, the affected residents are unable to seek medical treatment due to financial constraints.
Following an appeal from the Queen Mother of the area, Mama Aku Seme II, officials from the Ho East District Health Directorate of Ghana Health Service (GHS) visited the community. However, a budget of GH₵ 6,642.50 was set for the community to raise before treatment could commence, which they were unable to meet.

Chief Togbe Amedor III appealed to the government for assistance, stating, “We are pleading with the government to come to our aid because we are not able to raise the total of GH₵ 6,642.50 estimated budget.” The disease has now spread to neighboring communities, affecting over 46 individuals.
He emphasized the urgent need for government intervention to provide funds for mass medical treatment and implement preventive measures to safeguard the well-being of residents.

Chief Togbe Amedor III expressed frustration over the lack of information from health officials regarding the name and source of the disease, leaving the community in uncertainty. The lack of access to clean drinking water, coupled with residents sharing water sources with animals, may be contributing to the outbreak.
The chief’s plea underscores the urgent need for government support to address the skin disease outbreak in Mepe-Avetakpi. Immediate action is required to provide medical treatment and prevent further spread of the disease.
