The Ghana Boxing Authority has confirmed another tragic loss in the family of late Nigerian boxer Gabriel Olanrewaju, just two days after his burial. The GBA’s communication director, Mohammed Amin Lamptey, shared the heartbreaking news during a TV3 interview, revealing that Gabriel’s elder sister had also passed away shortly after his funeral. Lamptey expressed the family’s deep sorrow, stating, “He was buried successfully. Just after two days, his elder sister also passed away. We buried her last Friday.”

Gabriel, known as “Success” in the boxing world, tragically passed away on March 29 after collapsing during a fight at Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra. It took several months to repatriate his body to Nigeria, where he was finally laid to rest in Lagos on June 19, 2025. However, the family’s grief was compounded by the sudden loss of Gabriel’s elder sister, plunging them into deeper sorrow.

The cause of the sister’s death has not been disclosed, but the consecutive losses have left the family reeling and struggling to cope with the immense loss. Gabriel was well-regarded for his fearless fighting style and humble personality, and his untimely death had already sent shockwaves through the boxing communities in Ghana and Nigeria.

The second tragedy has further devastated a family that was just beginning to come to terms with the loss of their beloved son and brother. The boxing communities of both countries had come together in mourning for Gabriel, and this additional blow has only added to the heartbreak surrounding the entire situation.

In the midst of their grief, Gabriel’s wife revealed in an interview with Sporty FM on June 20, 2025, that she had not yet received the $3,000 donation from Ghana’s boxing authorities. The funds were being withheld due to disputes within Gabriel’s family over the money, adding another layer of complexity to an already tragic situation.
